Cupronickel is an alloy containing mainly copper and 10% to 30% nickel. The one with a large amount of nickel gives off a white brilliance similar to silver, so it is used as a substitute for silver in coins and the like. As an example, the 100-yen coin, which was a silver coin around the 1955’s, has been replaced with a cupronickel coin in the wake of the subsequent sharp rise in the silver price. Then it continues to be used to this day. Japanese 100-yen coins, 50-yen coins, and old 500-yen coins are Cu75% -Ni25% cupronickel coins.
